Red Star 1-2 Milan

Pippo Inzaghi was on the mark again to fire Milan into the Champions League group stage with a 2-1 win at Red Star Belgrade and celebrate president Silvio Berlusconi’s 1000th game at the helm of the club in fine style. The striker opened the scoring on 28 minutes, with a close-range header and Clarence Seedorf added a second on 79 minutes before the home side netted a consolation goal. The Rossoneri were set to face a red-hot atmosphere in the Marakana but rather than be intimidated, Carlo Ancelotti's side took the game to the hosts from the first minute and were never in any real trouble as they moved through the gears smoothly to put what had been a long and torrid summer well behind them.

Frankfurt 0-0 Wolfsburg

VfL Wolfsburg still waits for the first win and goal of the new Bundesliga season, after drawing 0-0 away to Eintracht Frankfurt in round 2 of the Bundesliga on Saturday afternoon. Diego Klimowicz missed from the penalty spot on 80 minutes as the 40,000 crowd in the Commerzbank-Arena held their breath. Woflsburg 0-0 Hertha

There were no goals for Wolves fans to celebrate on Sunday evening, as the team drew 0-0 at home to Hertha in the opening Bundesliga game of the new season, in front of 23,496 in the VOLKSWAGENARENA. Although both sides had their chances, a goal simply refused to fall. Argentinean striker Diego Klimowicz missed two sitters for the home side, while second half Hertha substitute Gimenez went close with a brace of headers.

New faces
The Wolves coach Klaus Augenthaler played two new signings (Möhrle and Madlung) in defence, and Santana and Krzynowek in midfield. Hertha coach Falko Götz left new signing Gimenez on the bench at first, opting to start the game with his new Croatian striker Lakic instead.

Chances for both sides
After 8 scrappy opening minutes, Mike Hanke fired an initial warning shot by way of a free kick which was easily dealt with by the Hertha keeper Fiedler. The capital city side started to create chances, the best of which were wasted by Lakic (15.) and Gilberto (18.). The former Hertha defender Alex Madlung had a good game on his debut, but headed well wide on 16 minutes as he rose above everyone else. Six minutes later, Klimowicz and Möhrle combined well but the defender who joined Wolfsburg from Duisburg during the close season narrowly missed the target.

Makiadi almost makes the difference
The home side began to gather momentum and Klimowicz was in the spotlight again after 30 minutes. Hertha hearts were in their mouths as Malik Fathi lost the ball to Makiadi while trying to dribble inside his own penalty area. Makiadi passed to Klimowicz standing alone some five metres out. The big striker got under the ball and blasted over the crossbar. Three minutes later, Fiedler punches away another Hanke free kick. Not much happened before the break aside from a Gilberto free kick on the stroke of half time. Both teams could hardly string two passes together and the game was goalless at the break.

Klimo misses another sitter
Both sides emerged unchanged for the second half, which began with another fierce shot being saved by Fiedler on 49 minutes. Hertha failed to get the final pass to their front two who were mainly left hung out to dry. On 66 minutes, superb approach work by Hanke resulted in Klimowicz with the goal at his mercy. Once again the Argentinean failed to hit an open goal while standing alone on the penalty spot.

Gimenez impressive
Hertha seemed happy enough with a point and stood solid in defence, while mounting some late counter attacks. Late second half substitute Giménez showed his heading prowess as he forced the home keeper Jentzsch into a couple of reflex saves. Nine minutes from time, new signing Santana could have scored on his debut for the Wolves.

WOLFSBURG: Jentzsch; Möhrle, Madlung, Hofland, Van der Heyden; van der Leegte; Santana; Makiadi, Krzynowek; Hanke, Klimowicz.

HERTHA: Fiedler; Chahed, A. Friedrich, van Burik, Fathi; Dardai; Cairo, Bastürk, Gilberto; Pantelic, Lakic.

Celtic 1-0 St. Mirren

CELTIC bounced back from last weekend’s defeat at Tynecastle with a 2-0 win over this year’s early league leaders St Mirren.

Last season’s First Division champions arrived at Celtic Park determined to build on the run of two wins that has propelled them to an early and perhaps unanticipated lead at the top of the league table and with Celtic having dropped points in their last competitive fixture against Hearts, many arrived here looking for a reaction from the defending champions.

What they got was a professional and solid performance from Gordon Strachan’s men, with Stephen McManus and Stilian Petrov’s first and second half goals sealing what was a convincing victory.

Celtic’s control over the match rarely slipped throughout the 90 minutes, but it was at times a cagey affair, with both teams failing to produce a decent number of clear cut chances.

There were however two noteworthy moments in the first half, the first being a thunderous, first-time shot from Aiden McGeady that would have been an early contender for goal of the season had it not rattled back off the woodwork and the second was McManus’s opener.

During the course of last season’s run to the title, the big centre half chipped in with no fewer than eight goals and this was a typical McManus effort, a charging run and header home from five yards after Shunsuke Nakamura had swung in a corner from the left.

The game continued in the second half in a similar vein to the first, with Celtic again enjoying the majority of possession, but it was the visitors who first came close in the 58th minute, with Kirk Broadfoot heading a Hugh Murray free kick inches wide.

This set piece was followed by a speculative Garry Brady effort and suddenly both teams were back in action, with Celtic pushing forward and St Mirren looking to have taken no small amount of confidence from these tentative forays forward.

But any hopes that last season’s First Division champions held of salvaging something from this match and maintaining their place at the top of the table were unceremoniously dashed by Stilian Petrov.

The Celtic midfielder arrived inside the box in the 65th minute to latch on to yet another perfectly threaded pass through the defence by McGeady, which allowed him to take one touch and thump his low shot beneath the St Mirren keeper and effectively end this match as a contest.

That said, more chances came and went for both sides, most notably a thunderous free-kick from Simon Lappin which rattled back off Boruc’s bar and also for Kenny Miller, who failed to break his scoring duck despite being presented with a glorious opening at the back post by Craig Beattie.

This performance may not have been ‘classic’ Celtic, but the home side’s dominance was perhaps best highlighted by the large numbers in the crowd of 56,579 who made for an early exit.

And after last week’s defeat the supporters will be relieved to see that normal service has resumed and that Celtic’s defence of the title is back on track.

CELTIC: Boruc; Wilson, Caldwell, McManus, Wallace (Pearson 56); Nakamura, Petrov, Jarosik, McGeady; Zurawski (Beattie 74), Miller.

ST MIRREN: Smith; Potter, Millen, Broadfoot; van Zanten, Brady (Brittain 77), Murray, Molloy (McKenna 83), Lappin; Sutton, Kean (Mehmet 69).

GOALS: 1-0, McManus (28'); 2-0, Petrov (65')

Botafogo signs Jefferson Feijão

Botafogo has signed striker Jefferson Feijão from Seongnam Ilhwa of South Korea. The player, that has represented Goiás, São Caetano and Internacional, before moving abroad, has signed a 18 months deal with the current Rio champions.

Feijão's signing aims to minimize the departure of the championship's top goal scorer, Dodô, who has left for Al-Ain, of the Arab Emirates, late last week.

Botafogo lies 15th in the Brasileirão, with just 3 wins in 14 matches, and a total of 15 points.
