Feyenoord 3 - 3 PSV

For a long time it looked like PSV would all collect all three points in the Rotterdam Kuip, which would have been deserved, in view of an impressive first-half display. The Rotterdam team, known for their resilience, staged a brave fight back and came down from two goals behind. PSV were 1-3 on top on 82 minutes, but then the game was turned upside down and Feyenoord even salvaged a hard-fought draw in the last minutes of injury time.

PSV needed only eight minutes to find the weak spot of the hosts. The set pieces from which Feyenoord concede many goals have been discussed many times. PSV earned a free kick n 8 minutes. Van Bommel took it and Cocu, who was left completely unmarked, simply headed home; 0-1. PSV then controlled the game for fifteen minutes, totally overrun the home side and Feyenoord were pushed back completely. Cocu was sent clear one minute after the opening goal, but he was controversially judged to be off-side. Paauwe then put an arm in the face of Farfán, who went down. Neither referee Temmink nor his assistant had seen the incident.

Feyenoord got some opportunities, but Kuijt and Kalou, their strike partners up-front, were invisible in the first period. Bart Goor created the best opportunity, following a fine solo run, but he saw his shot hit the upper side of the bar. Just when the hosts seemed to get back in the game, PSV doubled the advantage. Lee, who was often more of a left winger than a full left back, outwitted Kuijt and Song, before delivering a pin-point cross. Jefferson Farfán was in the right place to head home; 0-2. The Feyenoord defence once again did not make a solid impression, because neither Paauwe nor Saidi had marked Farfán. Gullit immediately decided to intervene: he brought on Castelen for Ghaly in order to strenghten the attack, but the extra forward could not make the difference, either. Ooijer was rightly shown yellow in the final exchanges of the first half.

Soon after the restart Feyenoord found their rhythm and when Goor had hit the post, Kalou was quick to pounce on the rebound and headed home; 2-1. So a period of as many as 1159 minutes without conceding a goal was put to an end for the Eindhoven, who set the new record last week away against De Graafschap. The home crowd now began to support their team, but although Feyenoord piled up the pressure, they did not earn any great chances. PSV managed to start some counter attacks and twenty minutes from final time they seemed to have made sure of victory when Ooijer found Beasley. Vonlanthen was in offside position, but as he did not participate in the move, the referee waved play on and DaMarcus Beasley rounded off at the far post; 1-3. Terms of abuse were chanted from the stands, but referee Temmink ignored the Feyenoord fans.

Against the run of play Feyenoord pulled one back on 82 minutes, when Ooijer slipped and Ono dispossessed him, after which he calmly finished; 2-3 De Kuip was alive once more and in an action-packed, tense finale PSV eventually dropped two precious points. As many as four minutes of injury time were added. PSV could have wrapped up things after all, when Ooijer and Park played a wonderful one-two that brought out a great save from Lodewijks. But the Belgian midfielder Bart Goor managed to score the equalizer.

Ahead of the domestic clash PSV would probably have welcomed a draw at the end of a busy week, but will now probably regret the fact that they have failed to become ‘the autumn champions'. They can still do so next Saturday night, when they play hosts to Roda JC

Goals: 6´ Cocu (0-1); 24´ Farfán (0-2); 49´ Kalou (1-2); 70´ Beasley (1-3); 82´ Ono (2-3); 90´ Goor (3-3)

Liberec 1 - 1 Slavia

Slavia got a point in a very spectacular match in Liberec which ended the autumn part of the season. Slavia had a great chance right in the second minute, but a series of shots did not end with a goal. The home side took the lead in 30th minute by Miroslav Slepicka, Slavia equalised in 63rd by Stanislav Vlcek who capitalised on a great pass from Patrik Gedeon. Both teams had several other good opportunities to grab the win, both goalkeepers provided many good saves. Slavia will very probably finish in the fourth place in the table. Galatasaray 1 - 0 Fenerbahçe

Galatasaray SK closed the gap at the top of the Turkish Super League to just two points after a battling victory against arch-rivals and leaders Fenerbahçe SK at the Ali Sami Yen stadium.

Necati goal
Necati Ates scored the only goal of the game ten minutes into the second half after picking up the loose ball following a tussle between Fenerbahçe's Fabio Luciano and Hakan Sükür. The Turkey striker rounded Rüstü Reçber before slotting in his tenth goal of the season. It was little more than Gheorghe Hagi's side deserved after dominating the first half with Necati, Sabri Sarioglu, Hakan Sükür and Hasan Sas all going close.

Fabio Luciano dismissal
The influential Hasan Sas was forced from the field with an injured elbow and Necati followed on 77 minutes after sustaining a head injury. Fenerbahçe posed a threat in the closing stages but the home side hung on and their task was made easier when Fabio Luciano was dismissed with three minutes remaining. Fenerbahçe remain on 40 points, just two clear of Galatasaray, who themselves lie just ahead of Trabzonspor.

FC Sochaux 1 - 2 PSG

Two first-half Pauleta goals helped Paris Saint-Germain FC record only their second away win of the Ligue 1 season, a crucial 2-1 victory over FC Sochaux-Montbéliard on Sunday night.

Pauleta goals
PSG needed a quick response to their elimination from the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday and Pauleta set them on their way when he controlled a Lorik Cana pass with his chest before unleashing a spectacular volley that flew past Sochaux goalkeeper Teddy Richert in the 24th minute. The Portuguese forward was on hand again three minutes before half-time, heading in his eighth goal of the season to the delight of coach Vahid Halilhodzic, seated in the stands as he began his two-month touchline ban.

Penalty miss
A second-half fightback from Sochaux meant PSG were made to work hard for this first win in five league outings, with Ilan striking a penalty against the post and Santos blasting the rebound over the crossbar with the goal at his mercy. The Tunisian striker made up for this miss on 75 minutes, though, heading past Letizi to set up an exciting finish. The capital club held on to move up into eleventh place, while Sochaux drop down to seventh.

Anderlecht 2 - 1 Club Brugge

Substitute Nenad Jestrovic came off the bench to score the winning goal for RSC Anderlecht against Club Brugge KV on Saturday and close the gap at the top to four points.

Broos changes
Victory for Brugge would have carried them ten points clear at the top and they seemed on course when Nastja Ceh pounced on a poor back-pass to give the visitors a 20th-minute lead. But Anderlecht coach Hugo Broos made two key changes, bringing on Jestrovic and Yves Vanderhaeghe, who followed up Vincent Kompany's shot to equalise midway through the second half.

Comeback crowned
Five minutes were left to play when Aruna Dindane carved open the Brugge defence and Jestrovic, making his comeback from a broken arm, scored the winner and inflict a first league defeat of the season on the visitors.

Athletic 1-0 Atlético

Atlético remain sixth after their 1-0 loss in Bilbao. The Basque side created the clearest chances during the opening half and were denied an early opener when Atlético goalkeeper Leo Franco pulled off an incredible save, flinging himself backwards to scoop a Carlos Gurpegi effort off the line.

Del Horno connects
Athletic did take the lead on the stroke of half-time when Asier Del Horno connected with an Andoni Iraola cross at the far post. Atlético could not come back and Athletic climbed to eleventh place.

ATHLETIC CLUB: Aranzubia; Iraola, Murillo, Prieto, Del Horno (Casas, min.83); Orbaiz, Gurpegui; Etxeberria (César, min.92), Jonan (Tiko, min.64), Ezquerro; y Urzaiz.

VfL Bochum 1 - 2 Hamburg SV

HSV bagged their 4th away win in five games by way of a 2-1 victory in Bochum in round 17. The win means that HSV will finish the first half of the season in the top ten places in the Bundesliga. First half goals by Sergej Barbarez and Collin Benjamin did the business for Thomas Doll and Co. in the final game ahead of the winter break.

Several changes
Bochum lost 5-2 away to Stuttgart in round 16 so it was no surprise that their coach Peter Neururer made four changes to his starting line-up for the visit of HSV. On Thursday his second choice keeper tore a meniscus during training, so his first choice keeper van Duijnhoven had to interrupt his recovery from a heel injury to face HSV. The Bochum playmaker Wosz, as well as fit-again striker Lokvenc and Zdebel und Bechmann came in for Misimovic, Trojan and Edu.

Dolly forced to re-think
After the 0-2 home defeat at home to Hanover in round 16, the HSV coach Thomas Doll was without the defensive duo Wicky and Schlicke, both of whom were suspended after collecting five yellow cards. Mpenza was also missing with an ankle injury. On the good news side, Doll was able to recall Sergej Barbarez and Khalid Boulharouz after suspension. He also picked the 20 year old Slovenian right back Brecko, for his first Bundesliga match for an age.

Both sides had a point to prove
The sums before the match were very simple. A win for the home side would leave them going into the winter break above the relegation zone. A win for the visitors would push them into the top ten places in the Bundesliga table. HSV was determined to prove that the home defeat against Hanover was nothing more than a flash in the pan.

Cautious start
Both sides started the game in a cautious manner, with the home side visibly nervous and HSV solid in defence, just waiting for the chance to counter attack. Both sides cancelled each other out in midfield during the opening 20 minutes or so, and then out of the blue, HSV went ahead on 26 minutes.

Two goals in 8 minutes
A long curling freekick into the box by Stefan Beinlich had Kalla flapping and Sergej Barbarez gleefully headed home his 7th goal of the season unmarked at the far post. The home side tried to come back at HSV, but 8 minutes later they fell further behind as Van Duijnhoven could only parry another Beinlich cross into the path of Jarolim, who kept his cool to pas to Collin Benjamin on the penalty spot, where he scored HSV’s second. HSV deserved the 2 goal half time lead.

One way traffic
Bochum’s coach Neururer took off the former HSV player Maltritz at the end of the first half. He had already been booked and looked likely to get a second card if he didn’t come off. Maltritz was replaced by Edu. HSV sat back on their two goal lead and let the home side come at them, and they did.

Piecke in top form
The home side created several half chances but Martin Pieckenhagen was in superb form, especially as he produced a world class save to deny Bechmann after 68 minutes. Ten minutes later though, the HSV goalie was powerless as Bochum pushed forward and Madsen hit a post with Pieckenhagen beaten. Takahara could have had a hat trick but once again failed in front of goal.

Bochum pull one back
Seven minutes from time, Bochum finally got a deserved goal as HSV failed to clear their lines and Bechmann blasted home a fine goal from the edge of the box. It was however, too little too late for Bochum, and HSV went home deserving their victory which they celebrated after the match with the hordes of HSV fans who had made the trip to Bochum.

Bring on Bayern!
So the first half of the season is over, and as Thomas Doll took over from Klaus Toppmöller HSV were propping up the Bundesliga table in last place. Since then the former HSV striker has breathed new life into the side, meaning that all HSV fans can look forward to the round 18 match away to mighty Bayern Munich on Friday January 21st. Bayern will be without Michael Ballack for the visit of HSV. The German international midfielder picked up his fifth yellow card during the 2-2 home draw against VfB Stuttgart. During that match Oliver Kahn boobed again, allowing Kevin Kuranyi to put Stuttgart two goals up.

VfL Bochum: van Duijnhoven - Colding (72.Meichelbeck), Kalla, Knavs, Bönig (65.Misimovic) - Maltritz (46. Edu), Zdebel, Bechmann, Wosz - Lokvenc, Madsen

Hamburger SV: Pieckenhagen - Brecko, Boulahrouz, van Buyten, Klingbeil - Benjamin, Jarolim, Beinlich (90.Rahn), Moreira (69.Mahdavikia) - Takahara, Barbarez (85.Reinhardt)

Celtic 0-0 Milan (CL)

AC Milan secured the point they needed to win UEFA Champions League Group F as they held Celtic FC in a scoreless encounter in Glasgow.

Celtic miss out
With FC Shakhtar Donetsk overcoming second-placed FC Barcelona 2-0 in the other fixture a point was not enough for Celtic, who missed out on the consolation of a place in the knockout stages of the UEFA Cup as the Ukrainian side overtook the Scottish champions to claim third position in the section.

Contrasting fortunes
There was mixed news for the home fans before kick-off, with Stilian Petrov recovering from an ankle injury to take his place in midfield, but full-back Didier Agathe ruled out by a groin injury. Carlo Ancelotti made seven changes to the side that defeated Shakhtar 4-0 on Matchday 5 with Kaká, Andrea Pirlo, Clarence Seedorf, Hernán Crespo, Gennaro Gattuso and Cafu all dropping to the substitutes' bench.

Promising start
Celtic started with Chris Sutton and John Hartson in attack and it was clear the Milan defence were unsettled by the aerial threat posed by the tall strikers in the opening minutes. On three minutes Aiden McGeady slipped past Fabricio Coloccini on the left before delivering a tempting cross which Sutton miscued at the back post and minutes later the 18-year-old McGeady went close with a powerful shot that rose just over the bar.

Milan threat
The Italian champions then showed their danger on the counterattack, Andriy Shevchenko testing the pace of Dianbobo Balde as he broke into the box, but the Guinean defender stuck out a leg to divert the ball back to his goalkeeper Magnus Hedman before the Milan striker could get his shot away. It signalled a period of sustained pressure by the visitors and Brazilian midfield player Serginho, one of the players drafted into the starting lineup, hit the crossbar with Hedman beaten.

Hartson denied
Celtic were now camped deep inside their own half but fortunately for them Milan appeared to be more interested in retaining possession. However, the home side almost opened the scoring just before half-time when Dida produced a magnificent save to turn Hartson's shot over after Jackie McNamara had crossed from the right.

Varga header
By now Celtic were aware that Shakhtar were 2-0 ahead against Barcelona in the Ukraine, meaning they had to find a second-half goal if they were to hold on to third place. McNamara was pushed forward from the back to inject some urgency into midfield and within minutes the Celtic captain had won a corner. Thompson swung the kick into the back post where Stanislav Varga managed to escape the attentions of Coloccini, but could only head wide.

Maldini misjudgement
Sutton then missed a gilt-edged opportunity on 51 minutes after a rare mistake by Paolo Maldini. The Milan captain misjudged a Hartson flick-on allowing the ball to roll under his feet ten metres out, but the English forward was taken by surprise and failed to take advantage.

McGeady influence
McGeady was the most creative influence in the Celtic midfield and on the hour his quick feet took him away from two defenders before releasing Joos Valgaeren down the left. The Belgian defender crossed the ball to the near post, but Dida was alert to prevent a scoring opportunity for Sutton.

Attacking changes
It was Valgaeren's last contribution as he was sacrificed moments later to make way for Henri Camara as Celtic went for broke, introducing Juninho Paulista in place of Petrov. It made little difference though, and Milan held on to end Celtic's European campaign.

Beveren 0 - 3 Benfica

Benfica comfortably secured their passage from UEFA Cup Group G after overcoming a spritely but inexperienced KSK Beveren side at the Freethiel stadium.

Red card
Simão Sabrosa’s early penalty and two simple finishes by Zlatko Zahovic wrapped up the points as the Portuguese side went top of the group against their young opponents who were down to ten men for almost the whole match.

Early blow
Home goalkeeper Boubacar Barry was sent off after upending Azar Karadas in the area after just three minutes, and when Simão stroked the penalty past substitute Davino Verhulst, the writing was already on the wall for the home side who had conceded eleven goals in their first two group G games. Karadas then had two great chances to make it two, first from Simão's pull-back, and then heading over from Manuel Dos Santos's cross after more good work by the goalscorer.

Lead doubled
Zahovic, sensing Beveren's vulnerability, was next to be frustrated, watching his stretching effort bobble just wide on 18 minutes. But the Slovenian midfield player only had to wait another three minutes to get his goal, running on to Bruno Aguiar's pass after Karadas's sharp dummy, and slotting it past Verhulst.

Disallowed effort
Benfica continued to press and Karadas curled another shot wide before Verhulst did well to shut out Zahovic's stooping header, Luisão tapping home the rebound only for the referee's assistant to rule him offside.

Beveren spirit
Beveren did show some glimpses of their attacking quality, with Mohamed Diallo and Moussa Sanogo both looking sharp. And on 25 minutes, Sanogo provided José Moreira with his only real test, cheekily squeezing in a shot from a tight angle. But it was normal service just after the half-hour, Karadas and Simão going close before Verhulst pulled off an astonishing reflex save to deny Zahovic his second.

Killer third
After the break, Sanogo went within a whisker of connecting with the darting Diallo's right-wing cross on 51 minutes. But it was Benfica who struck next. The home side appealed for offside as Aguiar found the unmarked Zahovic in front of goal on 59 minutes, but the Slovenian had just remained onside and he tucked it home to seal the victory.

Hosts persistent
Still the home side refused to roll over. Sanogo and the attack-minded defender Emmanuel Eboué both went close after the hour, before the two somehow worked Beveren's best opportunity, the latter's deflected cross ending up among the Benfica fans after the striker had failed to turn the ball into an open goal.

Benfica through
The result means Beveren will finish bottom of Group G and propels Benfica, who have completed their campaign, into first place, although they must await the outcome of NK Dinamo Zagreb's trip to VfB Stuttgart on Matchday 5 before they can celebrate winning the group. Beveren, meanwhile, will make the short trip to SC Heerenveen with nothing but pride to play for.

Goals: 5'(pen) Simão, 21', 59' Zahovic

Athletic 1-0 Steaua

A solitary Joseba Etxeberria goal, struck in added-time at the end of the first-half, was enough to secure Athletic Club Bilbao victory and give them a great chance of going through to the last 32 of the UEFA Cup although defeat could not stop FC Steaua Bucuresti celebrating their own qualifying passage.

Attacking waves
A single-goal victory was the least Athletic deserved from a Group B game which saw them launch a wave of attacks on the Romanian side’s goal. However they found it hard to beat Vasili Khomutovski, who made a couple of outstanding saves that his coach, the former Italian international goalkeeper Walter Zenga, would have been proud to claim as his own.

Steaua sure
The result leaves both sides at the head of Group B on six points and their goal difference is identical, each having scored four and conceded three. Steaua have completed their fixtures while Athletic still have one game to play, away against R. Standard de Liège. But whatever the results on Matchday 5, Steaua are assured of one of the three leading positions while Athletic need just a point to be sure of joining them.

Tough test
This was always going to be a tough assignment for them with centre-back Petre Marin and striker Daniel Oprita both suspended. In addition Florentin Dumitru, Tiberiu Curt, Sorin Paraschiv and Cristian Ciocoiu were all injured. But they started forcefully and Dorinel Munteanu was the first to bring the goalkeepers into action, Daniel Aranzubia gathering his shot at the second attempt. Khomutovski also looked none too convincing in the wet conditions with his first piece of work – fumbling a low shot from Santiago Ezquerro.

Pure class
However, the save that Khomutovski made from the same player in the 33rd minute was pure class. He had little time to react to Ezquerro’s header as the forward raced in to meet a free-kick and the keeper did exceptionally well not only to get a hand to the ball but to turn it around the post.

At last
It looked as if Athletic would go into the interval without scoring. Then Ismael Urzaiz headed down and Etxeberria, a threat throughout, put his volley out of Khomutovski’s reach. Urzaiz was to the fore again at the start of the second half with a header directed just wide. Athletic were intent on adding a second goal but Steaua were defending with dogged determination and behind them Khomutovski refused to be beaten a second time.

Urzaiz denied
In the 54th minute a pinpoint Etxeberria cross offered Urzaiz the chance to double Athletic’s lead but again Khomutovski saved well. The home side tired after that and almost let Steaua back into it. Aranzubia made a crucial block in the 77th minute after Nicolae Dica, finding himself in a generous amount of space, tried to dink the ball over him and moments earlier Andrei Cristea, standing unmarked at the far post, headed the ball agonisingly across the face of goal from Gabriel Bostina's cross.
